Parent University

Empowering parents of change.

We begin from the premise that parents are more than just caregivers. We know that empowering parents as adult learners, leaders and individuals also helps them become better advocates for their children’s education. We take a holistic approach to address parents’ personal development, relationship with their children and, finally, relationship with their children’s schools.

Together, we work to increase academic success and build a college-going culture among Latino families in DeKalb County.

Through regular meetings and workshops, Parent University creates a community of parents who support one another. Participants choose topics collaboratively based on their interests and needs.

Sessions have included:

  • Navigating the U.S. K-12 school system.
  • Financing a home.
  • Resume writing.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Immigration law updates.
  • College prep bootcamp.
  • How to apply for financial aid.

“My belief is that if we focus on developing the parents’ knowledge, on helping them see themselves as agents of change, then they can transfer those skills to serve as ‘parents of change.’ They feel validated as individuals, and they know they have something to contribute to their children’s education.” – Susana Das Neves, NIU Parent University Founder
